INTERESTING TID-BITS

Searching the Invisible Web

Savvy searchers have long known that search engines like Yahoo! or Google index only a small subset of static HTML pages on the Web. These search tools miss "the invisible Web"--the vast amount of content that is available in databases such as PubMed. A new Web site attempts to offer medical librarians and researchers a vehicle for searching the invisible Web. The site Medical Research Assistant ( http://www.MedicalRA.com  )--offers a subscription service based on the Research Assistant system from Prairie Land Consulting. To use the service, the subscriber first selects a category of data sources to search from a pull-down menu. Then, as illustrated in Figure 1 for the "literature" category, the user can enter a search term into the field, select sources to search against, and hit the search button. Search results can be presented by data source or by rank. Other categories include directories, practice guidelines, evidence-based content, clinical trials, patient information, or Web sites. Subscribers have a 30-day risk-free trial period, during which they may access and test the site's functionality. Subsequent costs are $22 a month, or $18 for subscribers who sign up before October 1, 2002. Measuring patient satisfaction

Online surveys can supplement your print satisfaction surveys, increasing the number of respondents and giving a voice to those who weren't selected to participate in the print surveys. Most healthcare organizations engage in some kind of patient satisfaction polling. And they benefit when the survey data are accurate, collected from a large population, and distributed and analyzed quickly. To expand the number of patients who are polled and facilitate the capture and distribution of polling data, Waukesha (WI) Memorial Hospital and a few other hospitals are

supplementing their regular print surveys with Web surveys. (From Internet Healthcare Strategies, www.corhealth.com/IHS/Detail1.asp?ID=786  )Reprints of the full text article are available at http://www.corhealth.com/Reprint.asp?RN=IH0207003
